Being a child in the 21st century is a tough! For a generation that does not know of life without technology, pressures to be ‘liked’ among our peers are stronger than ever before and occurring at younger and younger age brackets. Bullying, loneliness, stress, obesity/poor health, and emotional conflict at home can all lead to increased absence, low confidence or self-esteem, poor concentration and challenging behaviour.
Studies show there is a definitive link between children’s wellbeing and their engagement and subsequent success at school. In fact, the research paper ‘The impact of Pupil Behaviour and Wellbeing on Educational Outcomes’ by Institute of London* concludes “Our study demonstrates the importance of wellbeing for children and adolescents throughout their primary and secondary school education. There are critical periods, however, when specific dimensions of wellbeing are most crucial.”

The Good Childhood Index**
School is one aspect with which children are less happy, with around 12% of children aged eight to 15 being unhappy.
Almost half (49%) of all children agreed that there were many things about school that they did not like;
Children tended to feel less positive as they grew older – 77% of year 6 children (aged 10 and 11) agreed with the statement, compared to 71% of year 8 children (aged 12 and 13) and 56% of year 10 children (aged 14 and 15).
What are the benefits of Discover Your Bounce for schools?
The good Childhood Index report in 2012 highlights six key priorities for well-being for children that can make a real difference to their lives. We’ve shown here how the DYB programme fits with those priorities.
- The right conditions to learn and develop
Whilst we cannot materially affect the school environment, we can provide tools to children to help them within the school day – for example, improving concentration, building confidence and a sense of self with a positive outlook.
- A positive view of themselves and a respect for their identity.
We talk about the power of making good decisions and having confidence in our choices. Creating a good self image will empower individuals and educate that they deserve respect and great relationships.
- Enough of the items and experiences that matter to them.
We help them to identify things that make them smile – harnessing the internal happy spirit which then encourages them to do those activities more often.
- Positive relationships with their family and friends.
It can be difficult to manage the home environment however by helping people to understand positive influencers in their life and how to manage negative ones we can encourage our attendees to create happiness around them.
- A safe and suitable home environment and local area.
We show how good breathing combats stress and how the use of body language can diffuse challenging situations. We bring in tai chi and meditations techniques to give each child a tool box at their disposal.
- The opportunities to take part in positive activities that help them thrive.
We encourage taking part in physical activity and creating good habits for eating. Our belief is if children and teenagers can take responsibility for their own good health this will continue into adulthood.
How Our Schools Programme Works
Our syllabus can be targeted to address certain aspects across social, emotional or physical challenges and either for single sex or mixed classes and for different year groups.
We can provide:
- 1 hour workshops with year groups as part of a PSHE lesson or lessons
- 6 Week lunchtime or after school programmes for individuals or small groups up to 6
- Online access to support for students (Yr 12/13 only)
- Parent Talks/Workshops
