Weight, BMI, Blood Sugar, Cholesterol are all numbers we commonly associate with health but …do you know your Blood Pressure?

Approximately 16 million people in the UK have high blood pressure, and more than 125,000 a year will suffer from a stroke or heart attack as a consequence, with a third of these being fatal. High blood pressure does not often present with symptoms until it is too late, and this is why it is important to get your blood pressure checked.

From 9th-15th September 2019, we are joining the ‘Know Your Numbers’ Initiative, designed to raise awareness of high blood, and encourage more people to understand and get familiar with their own blood pressure.

The ins & outs of blood pressure

When the blood pumps around your body it provides the energy and oxygen your body needs. Your blood pressure reading is a measure of the blood flow combined with the resistance of your artery walls. Having high blood pressure means that your heart is working harder than it is supposed to and your arteries have narrowed which in turn increases the risk of a heart attack.

Approximately one in four men and one in five women aged between 35-44 have high blood pressure and falling into the overweight category with their BMI can be a factor.

A blood pressure over 120/80 is considered high and a blood pressure that remains persistently over 140/90 requires intervention and treatment to prevent further complications.

What can cause high blood pressure?

Your blood pressure can increase if:

  • You don’t do enough physical activity
  • You are overweight
  • You eat too much salt in your diet
  • You drink too much alcohol on a regular basis
  • You have a family history of high blood pressure

How can I improve my blood pressure?

1. Healthy Eating

  • Minimum 5 portions of fresh fruit/veg per day
  • Reduce/limit salt intake
  • Reduce/limit alcohol intake
  • Reduce/limit intake of saturated fats

2. Get More Exercise

3. Maintain a healthy BMI between 18-25

4. Reduce stress and anxiety
