What is Corporate Wellbeing?
Put simply, Corporate Wellbeing is having systems, processes and employee wellbeing programmes in place to take care of the long-term health and wellbeing of your staff. This commitment to Corporate Wellbeing ensures your teams are operating at their very best (what business doesn’t want that?!), and feel empowered and valued, which in turn reduces absenteeism and sick days, increasing loyalty and productivity. Simple!

Why is Corporate Wellbeing Important?
I know what you’re thinking, it doesn’t sound simple!
You might even be thinking it sounds expensive… or only for big companies with big budgets. But the reality is that the cost of not prioritising employee wellbeing is already substantial and rising across the UK.
In recent data, UK employees were sick for an average of nearly two full working weeks (9.4 days) per year, up significantly from pre-pandemic levels – a trend closely tied to health and wellbeing issues at work.
Poor mental health is now one of the leading causes of work-related absence and lost working days in the UK. An estimated 875,000 workers suffered from work-related stress, depression or anxiety in 2022/23, resulting in roughly 17.1 million working days lost.
The financial consequences are profound: poor employee mental health costs UK employers an estimated £51 billion per year, with presenteeism (being at work but not fully functioning) accounting for a large share of this cost.
So yes, not acting isn’t cheap, and the longer organisations ignore employee wellbeing, the greater the medium- and long-term cost will be
But it’s not just about the bottom line…
Competition for the best talent is increasing, and being seen as an Employer of Choice helps attract high-quality candidates.
At the same time, employee retention has become a strategic priority: retaining outstanding people is usually more productive, less disruptive and far more cost-effective than continually recruiting replacements.
The connection between wellbeing and performance is clear:
- 81 % of employees say their wellbeing impacts their productivity at work, and 44 % say it affects it significantly.
- 84 % of workers would consider staying longer at a job with better wellbeing support, reinforcing that wellbeing is now a key driver of retention.
Organisations that genuinely support their staff tend to have more loyal, motivated teams with lower turnover and that enhances reputation, culture, and performance across the board.
Wellbeing Investment Pays Back — Often Many Times Over
Investing in wellbeing doesn’t just reduce costs it also delivers strong returns:
✔ UK research shows that wellbeing and mental health programmes can generate on average about £4.70 back for every £1 spent, thanks to improved productivity and reduced sickness related costs.
✔ Broader analysis suggests that reducing the cost of poor wellbeing and unlocking the benefits of good wellbeing could be worth £130 billion–£370 billion annually to the UK economy, a significant contribution to national productivity and competitiveness.
✔ Systematic evidence also confirms that workplace wellbeing initiatives are linked to higher engagement, better performance, lower absenteeism, and stronger retention across sectors.
In Summary
Investing in positive workplace environments, inclusive employee wellbeing programmes and pro-active mental health support isn’t just the right thing to do, it’s an economically sound business strategy.
Wellbeing initiatives that reduce stigma, boost support and prioritise employee health can:
- Reduce sickness absence and presenteeism
- Improve productivity and engagement
- Strengthen staff retention
- Enhance employer reputation
- Deliver measurable financial returns
So, if you still need convincing, the evidence is clear: prioritising corporate wellbeing is good for people and good for business.
