Do you live your best life?

It is traditional at this time of year to assess your life and decide on the changes you may want to make in the year ahead in the form of your New Years resolutions. So, what changes do you want to make? Set aside your assumptions of how your life has to be and your capabilities and give yourself the gift of permission. Permission to dream, permission to consider your needs first and permission to let go of your past. How your life has been does not have to dictate your future. So free your mind and ask yourself these questions.

Three questions to shape your year ahead and for you to live your best life:

1.What would you like to start?

What does your best life look like? What would be in your ideal day? What are you missing? What do you talk about with passion? Now is time to consider your dreams! Make a commitment to your future and make one change to support it. This is often hard as when we are busy or in overwhelm it is common to think “I don’t know what I want! I only know what I don’t want!” Explore three areas of your life such as  – your work, your happiness and your health. What have you discovered about yourself and your needs?

If you aren’t committed to a change that means something to you, then consider questions two and three and give yourself space first. The important thing is not to make change because you think you ‘should’, but to make change that you truly desire. It is hard and arguably pointless to commit your life to things which do not serve you. Social media may have you considering your life through a certain lens. You do not need to have botox, lose weight or take up veganism to have a worthwhile life. Only you will know what is truly important to you.

Try something new and see if it gives you joy!

2. What would you like to stop?

We can become slaves to what we consider to be necessity. To make room for more wonderful things in your life, what would you like to let go of? Are you spending time on things which neither give you joy nor satisfaction? Or is your time being spent on things which no longer serve you or your higher purpose?

I would challenge you to delegate things which you can or simply decide to let some of your commitments go. Remember that delegation can be an opportunity for someone else to learn a new skill.

Deciding not to do something is as much an accomplishment as doing something new, as it can take courage to let go. Do not under estimate the power of creating space for new things to grow. It is what we gardeners do all of the time  – preparing land before we plant.

3.What would you like to do more of?

At this time of year, we often place our focus on our weight or fitness, but also consider fun and happiness. What makes you laugh or gives you a sense of connection? What have you enjoyed over the past few years, what would you like to do again? The art of living your best life is to make sure your needs are on your ‘to-do’ list. What better time to consider that than now!

And finally…

Gradual change is often easier to sustain than a sudden change of everything which can cause you to panic and back track on your decisions. Living your best life may mean making a change and then making another change. The world around us changes constantly so why don’t you make 2023 a year of gradual transformation?
