Is Your Tired Feeling Tired?

This is a subject line I used in a Facebook post. “Is your tired feeling tired?” It got a lot of likes, so I am assuming people are resonating with this right now. It got me remembering a time in my life when my tired was not only tired, it had bags under its eyes, a blanket in hand and was ready to hibernate let alone nap!

Because sometimes life runs away with us. We start out busy and excited about what we are doing and gradually more ‘stuff’ lands on our plate. We accept more and more. Adding in a few more hours and letting a bit of our self care go.  We convince ourselves it will be ‘fine’. And it usually is…for a while…until it’s not!

Empty tank?

Reaching the point when something else needs our attention (like perhaps a global pandemic!) and we realise the tank is empty is very common. We don’t realise, try to soldier on and at that point something or someone stops us. It could be an illness, a shock, or something else entirely. But when we realise where we are that’s the point when we also realise how unbelievably tired, burned out or sick we are. That is when we have no way of working out what to do next.

This was me in 2010.

I had a new business, a busy home life and I had suffered a stroke. Whilst I had received enough treatment to get me functioning again,  I still had physical disabilities, was in a world of pain and wasn’t sleeping. I tried to carry on and convince everyone (me included) that all was well…until one day it just wasn’t.

I drew the blinds, sat in darkness on the floor and said, “I’m done.”

I had no plan, I was just tired. I sat there for three days, just being done…but I think the silence, doing nothing and finally sleeping started to work its magic.

This would be an extremely long email if I told the whole story and I have already written it in my book, Rescued By The Coastguard, so I will get to the important bit.

After that three days I embarked on a journey of self care that eventually lead to the birth of Discover Your Bounce.

The Recovery

I adopted a series of routines and techniques. They looked after my mind, body and spirit and created a vision of what good looked like. For anyone that follows us these days that might sound familiar!

Perhaps your circumstances aren’t as extreme, or perhaps they are. Perhaps you are looking for something to help you put yourself first, or a community to support you in your goals. Maybe you are ‘done’ or ‘stuck’ or lacking the inspiration to put together your own programme to get you back to bouncing?

We would of course love to welcome you into My Wellbeing Club and help you get on your way, but in the meantime here are a few tips that really helped me.

1. Stop

When you do, nothing breaks. The world still carries on without you. Sure there may need to be some plans put in place and a few people may need to help.  But life really does go on – and I don’t mean stop for too long!

When you give yourself time and space, you start to tune into yourself. You look out at the world around you. If you stop for long enough your fight or flight switches off long enough for your inspiration to kick in.!

2. Look after you

Really! I would convince my mum and daughters that I was looking after myself, when really I wasn’t. Be honest with yourself and start to plan in a couple of good things. Try colourful veggies, actual good sleep, wandering without an agenda. Gradually, you will notice a spark of yourself that you remember. You may then be encouraged to make those bigger decisions.

3. Ask for help

You aren’t bothering anyone, you aren’t weak, it isn’t an inconvenience. If you are someone that likes to support those around you, chances are that someone is waiting to help you too!   Having  someone else in the situation with us, we can help us to find the energy and bravery to do what needs to be done.

I can’t promise that everything will change overnight. But I can be pretty sure that one day  you will look back and be amazed at what has changed and at how far you have come.
