In Creativity and Happiness

How many times have you heard “it comes in threes” when you hear bad news?

The “it comes in threes” assumption about a run of bad luck has origins which have long been forgotten but when the third has happened balance is restored. Maybe we stop looking after the third? Maybe it is divinity in action? Have you noticed that a lot of things in tradition also happen in threes?

  •  Father, Son and Holy Spirit
  •  The priest, wedding couple and witnesses
  •  The Three Kings
  • Mind, Body and Spirit
  • The Truth, the whole Truth and nothing but the Truth

These are just a few examples.

I was on a course a few months ago and as part of it we were invited into the gardens to silently stand in equilateral triangles with two others in the group without them knowing they were the other two points. Some people did circuits of the grass to get the correct distance from their other two points, some stood still. Whenever someone shuffled the others had to move to accommodate it. By moving to accommodate others I found that I saw the group from a slightly different angle, both physically and emotionally. Some were happy just standing in the sunshine, some  got frustrate and some got cross when they had to move. Some simply moved.

And so it is for any change….

When you change it can be hard on those around you who may feel they were quite comfortable where they were, and haven’t they moved enough already? If the triangle isn’t balanced, then more fine tuning may be required and even if they were told at outset (as with this exercise) what the aim was, people forget or don’t always check in with their reactions.

The Law of Three

For me, “The Law of Three” is all about embracing change and seeing where you are and how you feel at the end of the process. Move, watch and learn, or maybe you watch, move and learn – or learn, move and watch. It’s about understanding yourself and accepting that others will be themselves. It may be your choice to change, or it may not, but if you stay present and alert there may be something to be gained from the change to help you in the future.
