The Alternative Guide to Loving Your Life!

(That doesn’t require doing to the gym, going on a diet, joining a cult or winning the lottery!)

Most of us are okay most of the time.

We may get the odd sniffle, migraine or feel a bit stressed but most of the time we wouldn’t class ourselves as ‘ill’.

However!

What if we could feel ‘Fantastic!’ ‘Wonderful’ or ‘Marvellous’ every day?

Join a gym? Diet? Go for a holistic therapy? All good and helpful, but what if there was something a little more long term and also relatively effortless, that didn’t cost anything and would last for years?

Too good to be true! Or is it?

I suggest a new year MOT – not resolutions, just a simple exercise.

1. Stop

Completely. We never do this!

2. Observe how you are standing/sitting.

Is there a muscle that is tense? Give it permission to relax.

Does something hurt? Send it some good thoughts and tell it you will give it some rest…most of the time when our body stops us doing something, the first thing we do is curse it because it is stopping us getting on with our day. By sending some healing thoughts that way you will be amazed how much better it will feel, or the message you will get about why it’s hurting!

Where are you? Are you doing something you want to do? If you do this throughout the day you will notice that sometimes you really aren’t! Ask yourself if you have to do this unwanted thing, or is there a way around it? If you can’t automate it, delegate it or drop it then work out a plan of how you can limit this, or decide upon a time when you can stop.

3. Breathe – properly! Three full, deep breaths in and three long slow breaths out. Feel better? Your brain now has 70% more oxygen to help you think.

4. Connect with the planet and the universe – feel your feet rooted to the ground and look up at the skies, what an amazing place we live in!

5. Still feeling jaded? Take 5 minutes extra a day to rest, relax and breathe every day for a week.

6. Look outside – who is around you?

We all send out and receive energy all day every day. Like when we sneeze our energy goes out into the universe unseen, so we can be leaving behind buttercups and hollyhocks or brime and brimstone!

What are you sending out?

What are you receiving?

Look at the people you interact with every day – are they helpful, happy and make you feel good?

If not – oust them! There are easy ways to protect your energy – imagine a golden bubble of light surrounding you, it will keep out the negative Nellies!

Try it for 7 days!

7. What are you saying?

How many ought to’s, should’s or hopefullys are you using every day?

If you find yourself saying something negative stop and rephrase it.

8. Wake up happy!

Find a way to say something positive or funny within the first 3 minutes of waking up. Pin something to the bedside cabinet or the bathroom door – it can be inspiring or make you chuckle!

9. Watch your reactions – life is full of ups and downs and sometimes things don’t work out the way we want them. Sometimes we look back and can see why something didn’t work/happen, sometimes we never know. We do have something up our sleeve though, which brings me on to my last point…

10. Choose!

We are all part of a big wide world full of other people that impact what we do. Sometimes we can’t choose what happens, but we can choose how to react to everything! We can choose to do something, go along with someone, keep the peace, tow the line…or we can choose not to!

Learn to say no.

Start with simple things like no thanks I don’t want that bar of chocolate…nope, too hard – that cup of tea. Progress to the things that we really don’t want to do.

Learn to say yes!

Sometimes we say no to things because we think we shouldn’t/ don’t deserve it/ aren’t brave enough. Say yes to everything for a while to get into the habit.

Learn that in everything we have choices.

Some are easy, some are hard to face, but in everything we do have a choice.

These 10 steps won’t magically change your life in 10 seconds, but of you regularly follow them or go back to them when life gets busy/hard gradually you will notice that life gets easier, you have more energy and less things bother you.
