This week overwhelm has been the theme running through most of my conversations in both work and home life. I love spotting clear themes as sometimes it’s pointing me towards a new way to help clients and other times it’s highlighting something that needs attention in my own life. This time in fact, it was a little bit of both.

Sometimes things just pile up!

Overwhelm can creep into our lives so subtly that we don’t even notice it. All it takes is a late night or a case of the sniffles and suddenly our very manageable schedule becomes just a little too busy to cope with. It can even be something positive coming in that causes the confusion – a new opportunity that has some initial ‘teething problems’ that we need to work through. There are many scenarios that can bring overwhelm into our busy lives.

Once overwhelm has crept into our lives it becomes tougher to keep our energy up and we can start to struggle. Through conditioning we have been told to push through barriers and work to our limits but all this does is take our energy down into the danger zone.

It might not result in anything major – catastrophes don’t always occur and it may seem like life as usual… until you look closer.

Gradually the things that used to be straightforward seem harder. We start to use negative language, sigh often and make ‘ooph’ noises when we stand up. We might get grumpy, or tired, or achy…or maybe we start to make snap decisions that don’t work out well.

The very feeling of overwhelm can be a cause in itself. Once the ball starts rolling it can feel like a gargantuan task to turn things around and overwhelm is everywhere you look.

So how can we avoid overwhelm?

Avoiding overwhelm is the first step in the process and this is always where I start with my clients.

You need to stand back at least once a week and assess your diary. Do you need to have that meeting this week? Is that task you must get done really so urgent? Learn to say no or put things back that push you past your limits rather than trying to do everything.

The power of saying no can increase your energy in a number of ways, from a confidence boost knowing you have to power to do it to having more time in your day for rest and leisure activities.

The next step is to have someone supportive like an enlightened partner or mentor to help keep you on track. They can see when your energy is dipping and let you know it’s time to dial things back. It can increase your energy just knowing that someone else is looking out for you, as well as the obvious increase you get once you take that time out.

If however, you get to the point where you are a grumbling, beaten insomniac or get struck down by the ‘bolt out of the blue’ illness then stop. Overwhelm has already found you and it’s time to take a step back. You can increase your energy by eating well, drinking plenty of water and getting more sleep… make a point to nourish your body and rest completely at least until the fog lifts.

When you’re feeling better look at your diary and work out what needs to go. Overwhelm should be a warning signal, not an everyday occurrence and if this is the case you need to assess what the real priorities in your life are.

The good news is that overwhelm can lift in an instant and you’ll notice an increase in your energy quickly after! Making the conscious decision to focus on what’s important and to nourish our bodies as we go is a powerful message to the universe – one that can’t be ignored!

As time goes on you’ll find your energy returns and helpful people come into your life. You’ll find it easier to say no to things that will drain your energy and to prioritise as you go.

The most important thing about overwhelm is not to let it overwhelm you! ;)
