Out With the Old and In With the New!

It’s that time of year here in the UK, mornings have that crispy chill and the trees are starting to show their glowing embers. Nature is having a declutter, getting rid of the old and having a rest, ready to start again in spring.

This is the bit we sometimes forget in life and business, nature has a cycle which includes a clear out and a rest and yet we keep going, whizzing from one thing to the next. We are encouraged to be busy with technology and media and yet sometimes we just crave a rest!

My advice: tune in to nature, have a good declutter then take a break!

I walked my talk this weekend: my floordrobe and doordrobe that had been accumulating while I had a summer of travelling got the big heave ho! I folded away my summer clothes, sent those clothes – you know the ones – the ones that have been hanging around because ‘I might need it’ one day off to the charity shop. I sorted my shoes, gave my jewellery a sift and reclaimed my dressing table. When I woke up this morning I was stunned at the difference – I feel spacious and calm and ready for the day rather than my first thought being, “Ugh! I must tidy that!”

When we clear and declutter we are not only creating physical space, we are creating energetic and mental space too. It is said the brain re-sets itself when it gets sleep, water and silence…no wonder we get overwhelmed in today’s noisy world! All of our ought to’s, should’s and procrastinating keeps those negative neurons firing, so when we get things done we have less to clog the system. If you can’t – choose not to and diarise for another day so your brain can forget that one!

The energetic space we clear makes room for new adventures and opportunities, so combined with the mental clarity mentioned above we are ready to go! The trick here is to make sure you set your intentions for the right things to come in, otherwise someone else will get you busy!

There is a feng shui tradition of moving 27 objects to create change – I certainly did that at the weekend! I don’t know how it works, but it works! When I am waiting for an event to confirm, waiting to sell a house or life just feels a bit stuck this technique has served me well. If you are dubious, my advice is to just try – if it works you have another tool for change up your sleeve and if it doesn’t…well at least your house is tidy!

What do you have hanging around that you no longer need? Is your mind filled with a to do list that is weighing you down? Remember the rule with sorting is a) do you love it? or b) is it useful? If neither then bin it, charity shop it or sell it.

Oh and remember the rest after? A nice curry and a bit of Strictly was my reward – what would yours be?
